How to recycle light bulbs at Berkeley Recycling:

Enter the Berkeley Recycling Center from Second Street

As you enter the Berkeley Recycling facility turn left towards the drop-off area.

Deposit your light bulbs in the appropriate bin/area.

The following light bulbs are accepted at Berkeley Recycling

Fluorescent Lights

  • 8-foot and 4-foot tubes
  • Compact Fluorescent (CFL)
  • Circle light bulbs

(Universal Waste can not go into garbage)

High Intensity Discharge Lights

  • Metal halide
  • Sodium vapor bulbs

This service is for Alameda County Residents and small businesses owners. Small quantities can be dropped off for free, and anything above that we charge a fee.

Lamp Ballasts

Berkeley Recycling accepts most fluorescent light ballasts for a fee.  Ballasts must be removed from the light fixture and must be marked “PCB free”. (Read about Universal Waste).

The following types of lightbulbs are not accepted at Berkeley Recycling

Broken fluorescent lights

Enclose in a bag or wrap and tape and dispose in the trash.

Incandescent lights bulbs

These are free of mercury and can be safely discarded in the trash.
